Homework:
Vocabulary List
Students will have 5 - 10 vocabulary terms for the week. They will receive these terms on Monday and have an activity/quiz to complete in class on Friday.
Week One (September 5th - 8th)
1. Manipulated Variable (independent Variable) - the variable that is changed in an experiment. (the amount of water you give a plant)
2. Responding Variable (dependent variable) - the factor that may change because of the manipulated variable. (how much the plant grows because of the amount of water)
3. Hypothesis - an educated guess.
Week Two (September 11th -15th)
1. Scientific Theory - A well tested explanation for a wide range of observations.
2. Scientific Law - What scientist expect to happen.
3. Metric System - A system of measurement based on the number 10.
4. Atmosphere - The layer of gases that surround the earth.
5. Air Pressure – The pressure caused by a column of air pressing down.
Week Three (September 18th - 22nd)
1. Troposphere - The lowest layer in the atmosphere that contains all of the weather.
2. Stratosphere - This layer contains the ozone layer (made of three oxygen atoms.
3. Mesosphere - This layer protects the earth from most meteoroids.
4. Thermosphere - The outermost layer of Earth's atmosphere that extends to space.
5. Ionosphere - Part of the thermosphere that contains the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).
6. Exosphere - Part of the thermosphere and is the exit into outer space - contains satellites.
Week Four (September 25th - 29th)
1. Thermometer - Tool used to measure temperature.
2. Barometer - Tool used to measure air pressure.
3. Psychrometer - Tool used to measure relative humidity.
4. Anemometer - Tool used to measure wind speed.
5. Rain Gauge - Tool used to measure the amounts of rain fall.
6. Wind Vane - Tool used to measure wind direction.
Week Five (October 2nd - 5th)
1. Renewable Resources - A resource that is either always available or is naturally replaced in a short period of time.
2. Nonrenewable Resources - A resource that is not replaced in a useful time frame.
3. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) - Chlorine compounds that are the main cause of ozone depletion (created a hole in the ozone layer).
4. Greenhouse Effect - The process of heat being trapped in the atmosphere by a blanket of gases that surround the Earth.
5. Global Warming - The theory that increasing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will raise Earth's average temperature.
Week 6 (October 9th -13th)

Week 7 (October 16th - 20th)
1. Wind - the horizontal movement of air from an area high pressure to an area of low pressure.
2. Coriolis Effect - winds curve because of Earth's rotation.
3. Sea Breeze - Cooler air from an ocean or lake that moves toward land.
4. Land Breeze - The flow of air from land to a body of water.
5. Jet Stream - a fast moving band of wind above Earth's Surface.
Week 8 (October 23rd - 27th)
1. Evaporation - The process by which water molecules in liquid water escape into the air as water vapor.
2. Condensation - The process by which molecules of water in the air become liquid water. Cloud Formation
3. Precipitation - Any form of water that falls from clouds and reaches Earth's surface.
4. Transpiration - The process in which water is lost through a plant's leaves.
5. Runoff - Rainfall not absorbed by the soil that moves into bodies of water.
Week 9 (Oct 30th - Nov 3rd )
1. Cirrus Clouds - Wispy, feathery clouds made mostly of ice crystals that form at high levels.
2. Cumulus Clouds - Fluffy, white clouds that usually have the appearance of cotton balls
3. Cumulonimbus Clouds - Towering clouds that often indicate that thunderstorms are possible.
4. Stratus Clouds - Clouds that form in a flat layer and cover much of the sky.
5. Fog - a cloud in contact with the ground

Week 10 (Nov. 13th -17th)
1. Evacuation - to move away temporarily usually due to safety concerns.
2. Storm Surge - a dome of water that sweeps across the coast where a hurricane lands.
3. Isobar - Lines joining places on the map that have the same air pressure.
4. Isotherm - Lines joining places on the map that have the same temperature.
5. Meteorologist - A person who studies weather.

Week 11 (Nov 27th - Dec 1)
1. Homeostasis - the body's ability to keep everything stable or the same.
2. Cell Theory - All living things are made of cells.
3. Cells - the basic unit of structure and function in living things. All living things are made of cells.
4. Nucleus - the brain of the cell
5. Cytoplasm - the region between the cell membrane and the nucleus - The jelly-like structure that holds the cell parts in place.
6. Cell Membrane - the outer layer of the cell that controls what substances can enter or leave the cell.
Week 12 (Dec 4th - 8th)
1. Mitochondria - the powerhouse of the cell.
2. Cell Wall - the outer layer in a plant cell.
3. Lysosomes - the clean-up crew of the cell.
4. Cell membrane (plasma membrane) - the outer layer of the animal cell that controls what substances can enter or leave the cell
5. Vacuoles – storage tanks for the cell, stores food.
Week 13 (Dec 11th - 15th)

Week 14 (January 2nd - 5th)
1. Compact Bone - Hard, dense bone tissue that is beneath the outer membrane of bone.
2. Spongy Bone - Layer of bone tissue that has many small places (looks like a sponge) and found under the compact bone.
3. Marrow - The soft connective tissue that fills the inside of the bone.
4. Cartilage - A connective tissue that is more flexible than bone and that protects the ends of the bones and keeps them from rubbing together.
5. Osteoporosis - A condition in which the body's bones become weak and break easily.
Week 15 (10th - 19th)
1. Fracture - A break in the bone.
2. Dislocation - When the bone comes out of joint.
3. Sprain - When ligaments are stretched too far and tear in places.
4. Cardiac Muscle - Muscle found in the heart.
5. Smooth Muscle - Muscles found on the inside of organs and blood vessels.
6. Skeletal Muscle - Muscles that are attached to bone.
Week 16 (Jan 22nd - 26th)
1. Epidermis – the outer layer of skin
2. Dermis – the inner layer of skin that contains blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, sweat glands, and oil glands.
3. Melanin – the pigment that gives skin its color.
4. Digestion – The process by which the body breaks down food into small nutrient molecules.
5. Peristalsis – Muscle movements that keep food moving in one direction through the digestive system.
Week 17 (January 29th - February 2nd)
1. Epiglottis - A flap of tissue that seals off the windpipe and prevents food from entering.
2. Mechanical Digestion - chewing and the churning of the stomach. - movement
3. Chemical Digestion - the use of chemicals to breakdown food - stomach acid and saliva.
4. Villi - Tiny finger shaped structures that cover the inner surface of the small intestine and absorb nutrients.
5. Liver - The largest organ inside the body; it produces bile.
