“Timely Matters”
Homebase will only be from 8:20am to 8:26am. Please make sure that you are here on time to be counted present. Our first academic class will begin at 8:26am. Any bus rider will go straight to the cafeteria to eat breakfast, if they choose. Car riders will not be allowed in the cafeteria to get breakfast after 8:22am. Therefore, car riders planning to eat breakfast will need to arrive prior to that time. All 7th graders not eating breakfast will meet in the gym each morning.
Students will have two minutes between classes and will be given set restroom and locker breaks . They will be counted tardy if they enter a classroom after the bell has rung.

MATH
All 7th grade math teachers are following a pacing guide that was given to us by the county.
The topics that we will be studying this year will be:
1. Data Analysis
2. Integers
3. Variables and patterns
4. Linear equations
5. Proportions
6. Ratios
7. Measurement and Geometry
8. Probability
9. Number Operations
10. Algebra
11. Fractions and Decimals
Some of the concepts are review for the students and some of them will be introduced for the first time.
We do have a set of classroom calculators but, they are not allowed to leave school.
We use a TI-34 multi-view if you would like to purchase one for your student’s use at home.
ELA
Reading instruction is divided into four themes of study: Independence & Identity, Common Threads, What Matters/Deciding What Is Right, & Meeting Challenges. All of these themes incorporate fiction, nonfiction, and poetry pieces each quarter. The elements of fiction highlight characterization, setting and mood, plot, theme, and point of view. Nonfiction includes informational and biographical pieces. We use poetry to study literary sound devices and figurative language.
Students will create several different types of written pieces. Some of these will include creative writing assignments as well as formal evaluative and argumentative essays.
Finally, with vocabulary instruction, students will alternate weeks with Wordly Wise and Stem word parts. Each Wednesday students will take a vocabulary test in one of these two areas.
Science
7th grade science is divided into four different parts or concepts. During the first semester we will focus on meteorology and the human body.
In the 2nd semester, we move from the human body into Genetics. Students will learn about hereditary traits and DNA. We will relate this information to everyday life and how it is being used in the world today.
We will end the year with a look at forces and motion, basic physics, and simple machines.
Social Studies
Social Studies is a multi-discipline area where students learn about history, culture, geography, government, and religion for the time frame of 1400– present day.
7th grade students will use the knowledge learned to gain a better understanding of the world itself. This will also give students a chance to see how Stokes County fits in the world, and how what happens in far off places affects life in King, NC and the USA.

Homework..... is given on a teacher to teacher basis. Each individual teacher has his or her own homework standards. For instance in language arts, each student is responsible for reading three books independently each quarter, completing one detailed project, and taking three reading counts quizzes. In order to help with communication, please check your child’s Powerschool gradebook account for any information. We also have a team Weebly site that includes important school and team information. Each teacher has a tab detailing class information and homework assignments for the week. This will be a valuable tool for parents in aiding your student’s academic success. We do coordinate as a team to distribute projects and tests so as not to overwhelm the students.
